SoCal Superbloom 3/2019
Witnessing one of the biggest Superblooms in history take place in Southern California
The conditions have to be just right: substantial rainfall from late Fall to early Winter, cool daytime temperatures, and cold nights. It sounds more like Seattle, but when Southern California meets these criteria, things can get interesting. This year, after enduring three months of uncharacteristically heavy rain (and snow), Southern California saw one of the biggest Super Blooms in recent history. A group of friends and I couldn’t resist making the trip up to Antelope Valley to see the rolling golden hills painted with the sunset orange of the California Poppy fields.
Experts say these types of super blooms only happen once in a decade. California has had two in the past three years.
Weather patterns in California are becoming more extreme every year. In the span of one year this state has seen some of the most devastating fires in history while some of its cities experienced record rainfall. Places like LA and Joshua Tree saw snowfall, and now these super blooms are happening far more frequently. It’s unnerving to think about all the dangerous phases this climate is going through recently. Nature can be unforgiving, but sometimes it can be a blessing like this year’s super bloom. Who knows if we’ll get another bloom like 2019, so get out there while you can to experience the fresh air and vibrant colors before the Summer. And don’t step on the flowers!
